New Home Page for 2007-8

Our alternative (recruitment) home page for 2007 will be up until the end of September, but then we'll need to replace it. We could simply revert to our previous home page, but I've also created this new version based on the work I did back in February. It also occurred to me to add a...
bgcolor="#ffffff"
...after the...
background="home2007/homepage-background.jpg"
...so now the text is much more readable when the page first loads, since it sometimes takes a little while for the background image to load behind the text.

Note (added 20/8/07)
I discovered that my new version gets rendered incorrectly by IE (Internet Explorer) on a PC, either using version 5.5 or version 6 of IE; the NEWS headlines are out of line. It looks fine using Firefox on a PC or on a Mac, and also using Safari on a Mac. After a lot of experimentation I finally discovered what the problem was. It was to do with unwanted extra table space in IE. IE seems to handle the 'cellpadding' table attribute rather differently from other browsers, but when I switched to using 'cellspacing' to create the equivalent padding/spacing the problem went away. I do know that the modern way to design web pages is to use table-less layout, but I'm not yet as proficient with CSS as I am with tables. This has taught me a lesson, though!

So, here's the fixed new version.

Incidentally, I can now easily check (on my Mac) how pages look on a PC using either IEv6 or IEv5.5 thanks to VMWare Fusion which I purchased and installed just a couple of weeks ago, and this. There's always browsershots.org as well.
