Coding the new home page

Here's the coded version that John H presented us with a couple of days ago. We weren't very happy with it - especially the hyperlinks - so I've been trying to see whether I could improve on it.

Here's my first attempt; this works fine in modern browsers, except when the font size is increased. In IE5 on a PC the font size does come out very large, and this destroys the look of the page completely. By contrast, John H's version (which is table-less) looks the same in IE5 as it does in more up to date browsers. Incidentally, I re-created the greyed out areas by making a copy of the photo with very increased brightness and very reduced contrast.

I subsequently tried changing the font size definitions within the stylesheet from "em"s to "px"s, and that's fixed it! I also tweaked one or two other minor things; so now here's my second attempt.

My second attempt is now our new home page, as of today. Here is the page it replaced.
