The random news item that is currently displayed within our alternative home page is fine, but I thought it might possibly be a good idea to use a news ticker in the future instead. A ticker would draw attention to the news, and possibly give the page a little more life.

I remembered that there's a news ticker on the BBC's news home page, so I tried playing around with the JavaScript that they use. Here's the result; it's not very good from a cosmetic point of view, but it works! I'm not sure that it would make sense to have both a news ticker and a "LATEST NEWS" section in the home page, though - it ought to be one or the other I think.
