Meeting with Geoff E.
I met with Geoff E. again today and we agreed the following:
- That we would pay John H. the extra money required to finish off the CV pages (the extra work required is indicated in this blog entry).
- Geoff liked my suggested Better Staff Announcements System, and agreed that we should go ahead with this. Geoff said that he would still like to keep a "monthly announcements" space within the StaffWeb home page; perhaps the top half of the announcements area could show the monthly announcements, with a short list of the most recent emailed announcement subject headings at the bottom - plus a link to the full archive of emailed announcements. I'll talk to Mike about this soon. I guess that this wouldn't be very difficult for Mike to implement, although I'm sure it'll require quite a lot of work. As an alternative, there are probably open source scripts for this kind of thing that we could make use of.
- I showed Geoff a draft version of our alternative home page that Mike put together; here is a screenshot of it. We discussed ways of improving it slightly - for example by shortening every "MSc/PgDip(/PgCert)" to just "MSc" - and I said that I would ask Programme Directors to check it once I had done a little more work on it.
- Geoff said that while he liked our CV pages, there was a need to collect CV information for all academic staff in a more consistent format, along the lines of the staff pages that are displayed within the Institute for Comuting Research website - as shown in this example. We need this kind of consistency (and conciseness) for QAA reviews etc. Geoff suggested that perhaps our current CV ("biography") pages could in the future link to more formal "academic cv pages". This is clearly a fairly major piece of work; I think it might be a suitable project for the placement student to get their teeth into. (Les N. and I will be interviewing candidates for the placement post on Monday.)
