On our alternative home page we want to display a random news item, so I thought I should check out how to do that. Here is how it's been done for the AHS Faculty home page; view source to see the JavaScript, and refresh this page to see different news headlines appear...
   

I think this solution is fine, so I'm not going to bother looking for alternatives!
