Firstly, about m.e.
Secondly, about this website
My personal website was previously hosted on London South Bank University's unix web server, but I was getting bored with it. Also, I wanted to create a new site the "modern" way using css instead of html tables for layout. I tried to create a new site using the new
Google Labs Page Creator system, but it was a struggle. The main plus points are that Google provides a generous 100MB of free web space and no adverts, at least at the time of writing (August 2006), but there are many negative points - although given that it's still a
Google Labs experimental system I really shouldn't complain about it. The main drawback is that there's no way (at the time of writing) to create subdirectories, so it's only really useful for very small websites containing no more than a handful of pages and images. So I decided to purchase my own domain (
mebush.net) - mainly for the purpose of self-education. I transferred my Google pages onto it, and after that it was much easier to get them to look the way I wanted because I had control of the stylesheet. A basic web hosting package (inc. domain name registration) is not expensive, and it gives me much more freedom than I have on my university's unix web server. Another reason I did this was because I was gearing up to teach a new course on web design and wanted to experience working with a commercial web hosting facility, but as it turned out I didn't get to teach that course after all!
